Siemens S7-1200 spares: CPUs, signal modules and boards

The S7-1200 arrived in 2010 as Siemens' answer to the growing demand for a low-cost, compact controller that did not compromise on capability. Built around a single integrated unit with onboard Ethernet and a removable terminal block, it brought PROFINET connectivity and TIA Portal programming to applications that would previously have required a larger controller. For machine builders and system integrators in South Africa, it quickly became the default choice for standalone machines, pump stations, packaging lines and small process skids.

Expansion is handled through signal modules that clip onto the right-hand side of the CPU, adding digital or analogue I/O without growing the footprint significantly, while signal boards plug directly onto the front of the CPU to add a handful of points for simple applications. Communication modules such as the CM 1241 enable serial, PROFIBUS and other industrial networks, allowing the S7-1200 to sit alongside older equipment on mixed networks. This modularity within a compact envelope is what makes the platform so versatile across the range of applications seen in South African industry.

Because the S7-1200 is programmed exclusively in TIA Portal, the compatibility chain between the CPU firmware version, the TIA Portal version and the hardware configuration is a common source of confusion when replacing a controller. The good news is that the platform is current and well supported, with spare CPUs and modules generally available from stock or short lead times. For plants standardising on Siemens, the S7-1200 fills the gap between small machine control and the larger S7-1500 range, and its widespread installed base means most maintenance engineers in the region are already familiar with it.
